US President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping once again ahead of the conclusion of his state visit to Beijing, describing the trip as “a great honor” and announcing that the two leaders had discussed trade, Iran and broader strategic ties between their countries.
Speaking after the meeting, Trump said the United States and China had reached “fantastic trade agreements” and praised his relationship with Xi Jinping.
“We made some fantastic trade deals. He is a person I have great respect for, and we have become very good friends. We discussed Iran. We share similar views on that — we want this to end. We do not want them to have nuclear weapons. We want the straits to be opened. They cannot possess nuclear weapons. I want to thank President Xi Jinping. It is a great honor for me to be here. These have truly been wonderful days,” Trump said.
The US president also announced that he is expected to meet Xi Jinping again on September 24, when the Chinese leader is scheduled to visit the United States.
For his part, Xi Jinping described Trump’s visit as a “historic and significant event,” saying it had helped establish a new framework for relations between the two countries.
“This visit was a historic and important event. We have established a new, constructive strategic relationship between our two nations. It can truly be regarded as a significant moment,” Xi said.
On the second day of meetings in Beijing, Trump and Xi were also seen walking together in the gardens of Zhongnanhai, a leadership compound that serves as the central headquarters of the Chinese government.
