The US Senate has overwhelmingly advanced bipartisan legislation that would impose sweeping new sanctions on Russia and extend penalties against Iran, clearing the way for a final vote on the long-delayed bill championed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
The procedural vote passed 86-12, with nearly all Republican senators and a majority of Democrats backing the measure. The result comfortably exceeded the 60 votes required to move the legislation to a final Senate vote.
The bill would significantly tighten sanctions on Russia while also expanding penalties targeting Iran, marking one of the strongest bipartisan congressional efforts to increase pressure on both countries.
