Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed Nauru’s decision to terminate diplomatic relations with Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region, also known as South Ossetia.

The ministry said Nauru’s Cabinet made the decision on July 21, 2026, ending diplomatic ties with the entities referred to by Nauru as the “Republic of South Ossetia, also known as the State of Alania” and the “Republic of Abkhazia.”

Georgia’s Foreign Ministry said the move confirms Nauru’s respect for international law and expressed readiness to establish diplomatic relations with Nauru and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The de facto authorities in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region have not yet commented on the decision.

Russia recognized Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region as independent states on August 26, 2008, following the Russia-Georgia war. Only four countries — Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, and Syria — have recognized the two regions’ so-called independence. Vanuatu and Tuvalu also previously recognized them but later withdrew their decisions.

Georgia and its international partners consider Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region to be territories occupied by Russia.
