The National Environmental Agency has issued a weather warning for Georgia, forecasting unstable and potentially hazardous conditions across several regions over the coming days.
Agency says rain is expected in western Georgia from January 9 through the morning of January 10, with heavy rainfall forecast in some areas. The weather may be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, while storm activity at sea could reach 3–4 points, posing risks to maritime traffic and coastal areas.
In high mountainous regions, forecasters expect snowfall, including heavy snow in certain locations, along with fog and blizzards. These conditions are expected to significantly increase the risk of avalanches, particularly in areas prone to snow accumulation and rapid weather changes.
The National Environmental Agency warned that adverse weather could disrupt transportation, noting that traffic restrictions may be imposed on certain road sections due to heavy snowfall, blizzards, reduced visibility, icy surfaces, and avalanche danger. Authorities also cautioned that intense precipitation could lead to a sharp rise in river water levels in western Georgia, while hilly and mountainous areas may face an elevated risk of landslides and mudflows.
“The expected weather conditions may significantly raise water levels in rivers in western Georgia and, in hilly and mountainous areas, trigger or activate landslides and mudflows. The overall danger level is assessed as medium,” the Agency said in a statement.
The National Environmental Agency urged the public, drivers, and relevant services to exercise caution, closely monitor official updates, and follow safety recommendations, particularly in mountainous and coastal regions where conditions may deteriorate rapidly.
