The Georgian government will allocate 53,000 GEL for the creation of a website providing information on the social basket and discounted essential products.
The decision was approved by Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze, who signed the relevant decree.
Under the decree, the funds will be transferred from the government reserve fund to the Georgian Competition and Consumer Protection Agency, which will be responsible for developing and operating the platform.
The document states that the website’s purpose is to ensure citizens have access to information about discounted primary consumer products.
The initiative follows the work of a temporary parliamentary commission established by the ruling Georgian Dream party to study the pricing structure of food products, medicines, and fuel.
The commission completed its work on May 1 and published its final conclusions. The report states that profitability indicators in Georgia’s retail sector do not point to excessive margins and are in line with international standards.
