Aleko Elisashvili’s lawyers appeal 13-year prison sentence- Lawyers of Aleko Elisashvili, a leader of the opposition party “Strong Georgia – Lelo,” have appealed the guilty verdict issued by the Tbilisi City Court against the politician, InterPressNews reports.
Elisashvili’s lawyer Archil Chophikashvili said the opposition politician is being persecuted because of his political views. He added that the defense hopes the “illogical verdict” will be overturned by higher courts.
“It is impossible that two bottles of gasoline could cause the apocalyptic consequences for which Alexander Elisashvili was sentenced to 13 years in prison,” the lawyer said.
A separate hearing in another case against Elisashvili is scheduled at the Tbilisi City Court, involving an alleged insult toward police officer Shota Chipashvili.
Elisashvili faces four criminal cases in total. He has already been convicted in a case involving an alleged attempted terrorist act and sentenced to 13 years in prison. He is also charged in cases related to alleged arson at the court archive building, contempt of court, and the alleged political persecution of Ali Babaev, a co-founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
