A student of the Sighnaghi Art School, Mate Mchedlishvili, has won first honorary place at the IX Ferenc Liszt International Competition, the Sighnaghi Municipality Association of Music and Art Schools announced.
The international competition is dedicated to Franz Liszt (Ferenc Liszt, 1811–1886), the Hungarian composer, pianist, and one of the most influential figures of the Romantic era. Known as a pioneering virtuoso performer, Liszt transformed the role of the piano in classical music and composed some of the instrument’s most technically demanding works.
The Liszt Ferenc International Competition brings together young pianists from different countries and aims to encourage emerging musicians, support their artistic development, and provide opportunities for international recognition.
Mchedlishvili’s achievement highlights the role of regional music schools in Georgia, where young musicians receive specialist training in performance, music theory, and classical repertoire. The Sighnaghi Art School is part of the network of municipal music and arts schools that provide music education outside Georgia’s major cultural centres.
Sighnaghi, a historic town in Georgia’s Kakheti region, has a long association with arts and culture, and the achievement marks an international success for the town’s young musical community.
