Opposition ‘Citizens’ party leader Aleko Elisashvili has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after being found guilty of attempting to organize a terrorist act.
The verdict was announced on July 10 by Judge Giorgi Gelashvili. The article under which Elisashvili was convicted carries a prison sentence of between 10 and 15 years.
Elisashvili was charged with attempting to organize a terrorist act at the separate auxiliary “Chancellery” building of the Tbilisi City Court on November 29, 2025.
Following the hearing, prosecutor Ana Khubejashvili told journalists that evidence presented by the prosecution “proved that Aleksandre Elisashvili committed an attempted terrorist act.”
Khubejashvili said the judge considered that Elisashvili did not deserve the minimum sentence due to his failure to admit wrongdoing and lack of remorse.
‘Lelo – Strong Georgia’ called Aleko Elisashvili’s 13-year prison sentence a political decision, claiming that he is a “political prisoner of the Ivanishvili regime” and that the Georgian court system has become an instrument of political retaliation.
Elisashvili was also charged on March 30 with another offense related to allegations that he set fire to the Tbilisi City Court archive building in May 2025.
Elisashvili denies being the person shown in footage released by the Prosecutor’s Office in connection with the incident. He and his lawyers have rejected the allegations brought against him.
