The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) has warned citizens about a series of fraud attempts involving individuals impersonating representatives of the bank.
The NBG said unknown individuals have recently contacted citizens through the WhatsApp messaging application and other communication channels while falsely presenting themselves as National Bank representatives. The individuals have also illegally used the bank’s logo.
The NBG states that the fraudsters allegedly offer assistance with repaying existing loans or carrying out other financial transactions. In one case, a citizen was told that their personal banking data may have been accessed without authorization and that someone had attempted to activate a loan. The person was then asked to log into internet or mobile banking using their credentials to “verify” the issue.
The National Bank said users have also been asked to provide authorization details, including usernames, passwords, and other personal and financial information.
The NBG warned that sharing such information could allow fraudsters to access bank accounts, leading to unauthorized transactions and potential financial losses.
The bank urged citizens not to disclose personal or financial information, including login details for internet and mobile banking, and not to enter such data through suspicious links sent by unknown individuals.
The National Bank advised people who encounter similar situations to contact law enforcement agencies.
The NBG regularly publishes warnings and educational materials on common financial fraud schemes as part of its efforts to protect consumers in the financial sector.
