Prison officials resign amid probe into alleged assault on former Co-Investment Fund Head

The Special Penitentiary Service has issued a statement regarding the alleged assault case of Giorgi Bachiashvili, former head of the Co-Investment Fund.

The agency says due to the risk of “possible interference in establishing objective truth,” the head of Penitentiary Establishment No. 8, Davit Gogiberashvili, and the Deputy Director of the Penitentiary Department of the Special Penitentiary Service, Gia Kemoklidze, have resigned.

Investigators suspect that “certain employees of the agency, inmates under their influence, and convicted Giorgi Bachiashvili may have acted in collusion.” The Penitentiary Service stated that several individuals have been questioned within the framework of disciplinary proceedings.

The agency also noted that the decision to place convicted persons Kakhi Metreveli and Giorgi Bachiashvili in the same cell is questionable.

Bachiashvili’s lawyer, Davit Jandieri, released a letter written by his client, in which the businessman stated that on July 11, he was physically assaulted in his cell in Gldani prison by an unknown individual.

The investigation is underway under Article 126, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which pertains to “systematic beating or other violence that caused physical or psychological suffering to the victim.”
