The Health Minister says the state will purchase medication for the treatment of cystic fibrosis. Mikheil Sarjveladze noted that introducing the medication will be a turning point for many children, opening the way to a completely new and healthier life.
“Thanks to the joint efforts of the state and parents, an agreement was signed today with Vertex, under which the state will purchase the so-called gene modulator Trikafta”, – Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze said.
“Georgia will be among the relatively few countries to provide this expensive medication through its state program with full state funding. The medication has been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for patients aged two and older with relevant responsive mutations.
The innovative therapy directly targets the genetic defect that causes the disease and significantly improves lung function in patients.
The treatment also significantly reduces the frequency of pulmonary exacerbations and the need for hospitalization. According to real-world data studies, the overall reduction reaches 76%, a result supported not only by studies but also by clinical practice and evidence.
Work to introduce the medication will continue from today, and we will maintain active cooperation with parents. In practical terms, we will begin the process of supplying the medication in September.”
