The Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia reported that Georgian students delivered a strong performance at the 2026 European Mathematical Olympiad, securing one gold medal, three silver medals and two honorable mentions.

The competition, held in Vilnius, brought together 138 students from 23 teams representing 21 countries. The Georgian team placed fifth overall, a notable achievement on the international stage.

Sandro Zhghenti, a student of the Vladimir Komarov Tbilisi Physics-Mathematics Public School, won the gold medal. Silver medals were awarded to Mirza Shanidze, Giorgi Gumberidze, and Irakli Sherozia, all from the same school. Honorable mentions went to Aleksandre Katsia (Komarov School) and Rati Ratiani from the Ilia Vekua Tbilisi Public School No.42.

The team was led by Genadi Margvelashvili, director of the Andria Razmadze Kutaisi Physics-Mathematics Public School No.41, with Luka Macharashvili serving as co-leader and Zura Abramishvili, a representative of the Global Talent Fund, as observer.

The Olympiad consisted of two rounds, each lasting 4.5 hours, during which participants solved problems in algebra, geometry, combinatorics and number theory.

Georgia’s participation was funded by the Ministry of Education, with additional support from the Kutaisi International University City. Team members were selected through national Olympiads and additional qualifying rounds.

Georgia has participated in international mathematics Olympiads since 1993, building a consistent record of success. Since then, Georgian students have earned multiple medals, including six gold, 23 silver, and 83 bronze, along with 59 honorable mentions.
