The opposition Gakharia for Georgia party has issued a statement marking the 18th anniversary of the 2008 Russia-Georgia War, accusing the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party of failing to adequately respond to Russia’s continued occupation and what it described as ongoing annexation efforts.
The party said it was “cynical” that, on the anniversary of the war, Georgian Dream representatives appeared more concerned about alleged “Russophobia” than about the occupation and Georgian citizens who have suffered as a result.
“Eighteen years ago, Russia openly invaded Georgia and occupied Georgian territories — Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region. We paid a heavy price while defending our homeland against the aggressor, and we honor the heroes who sacrificed their lives,” the statement reads.
Gakharia for Georgia said Russian aggression against the country continues to this day, with Georgian territories remaining occupied and Moscow, party said, accelerating the process of the “de facto annexation” of the occupied Tskhinvali region.
“Against the backdrop of these alarming developments, instead of mobilizing the international community, the Georgian Dream government chose to blame its own country, while responding to the ongoing annexation processes with criminal silence,” the party said.
It added that it was particularly cynical that Georgian Dream representatives were more concerned about so-called “Russophobia” than about Russia’s occupation and Georgian citizens affected by it.
The party called on the international community to firmly support Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and condemn what it described as ongoing annexation processes in the Russian-occupied territories.
“Today, this support is even more important against the backdrop of Georgian Dream’s collaborationist policies,” the statement said.
“Glory to the heroes! Glory to Georgia!” the party concluded.
