Hungarian journalist and activist Laszlo Mezesi left Georgia last night after deciding to voluntarily depart the country, his lawyer Tornike Janelidze said.
Mezesi was taken to the airport by immigration officials, where he was met by several colleagues and friends. The planned court hearing was no longer necessary after the journalist chose to leave Georgia.
Police detained Mezesi two days ago near Tbilisi State University metro station in Saburtalo. The Interior Ministry said he was staying in Georgia without legal grounds and had exceeded the permitted period of stay.
Janelidze told Publika that Mezesi made the decision to leave the country without pressure and would personally explain the reasons behind his decision after leaving Georgia.
