Georgia’s Revenue Service reported that a suspected attempt to transport sanctioned goods to Russia was uncovered at the Sarpi customs checkpoint.
On July 24, a vehicle with Azerbaijani license plates entered Georgia from Türkiye, carrying European-origin goods in transit to Russia. After reviewing the documents, customs officers determined the shipment was subject to EU sanctions enforcement measures, and the vehicle was returned to Türkiye.
Several hours later, the same vehicle attempted to enter Georgia again. This time, the submitted certificate of origin listed Türkiye as the source country of the goods. However, a partial inspection found factory labels indicating that the products were manufactured in Germany and Croatia.
Due to suspected document falsification and an attempt to transport sanctioned goods while bypassing customs controls, the case materials were transferred to the Investigation Service of Georgia’s Ministry of Finance for further action.
