According to the Agency of Protected Areas (APA), the creation of Guria National Park is planned to protect and preserve the unique nature of the mountainous landscape of Guria.

The project is being planned by the Agency of Protected Areas of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and is financially supported by the Embassy of Sweden. As APA states, the active involvement of the local community is expected.

In order to successfully implement this project, various types of research by local and international experts are planned at this stage.

“The new project aims to address challenges in Guria forest landscapes, in particular human-induced damage, protect biodiversity and preserve the ecosystem for the well-being of both the local and non-local community,” the statement reads.

According to APA, the ancient forests and arable lands preserved in Guria are recognized as major areas of ecoregion biodiversity (KBA). At the same time, these landscapes are part of the Caucasus Ecoregion Conservation Plan (ECP).
