The body of a young woman Elene Sakheishvili, who was swept away by a river while trying to rescue her seven-year-old son, has been recovered following a search-and-rescue operation.
Based on available information, her body was found approximately 1.5 kilometers from the scene of the incident. Family members have taken the body home.
Sakheishvili had traveled with her two children, aged seven and four, to stay with relatives in the village of Kariata in Georgia’s Khobi municipality.
On the morning of the incident, she took the children for a walk near the river. Her seven-year-old son, Lazare, entered the river, prompting his mother to immediately go into the water in an attempt to save him. However, the strong current swept both of them away.
The four-year-old child, who remained on the riverbank, reportedly called out for his mother and brother for some time before running back to the house and alerting family members to what had happened.
Lazare’s body was subsequently found approximately 400 meters from the scene.
As of the evening of August 6, Sakheishvili remained missing, with authorities planning to resume the search-and-rescue operation the following morning. Her body was later recovered approximately 1.5 kilometers from where the incident occurred.
