The Government of Nauru has announced it is withdrawing its recognition of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region as independent states and has severed diplomatic relations with both.

In a statement, the government said the decision takes effect immediately and that the relevant parties will be notified through diplomatic channels.

“The Government of the Republic of Nauru announces the withdrawal of recognition of the Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Abkhazia as independent states,” the statement reads. “Accordingly, the Republic of Nauru has immediately severed diplomatic relations with South Ossetia and Abkhazia.”

Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the decision, noting that Nauru’s Cabinet adopted it on July 21, 2026.

The Foreign Ministry also said Georgia is ready to establish diplomatic relations with Nauru and expand bilateral cooperation based on shared interests.
