Waste Management Code violations exceed 2,600 in first half of 2026

The Department of Environmental Supervision identified 2,664 violations of the Waste Management Code across Georgia from January 1 to June 30, 2026, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture reports.

The largest share of violations involved environmental pollution with municipal waste, with 713 cases recorded. The department also identified 267 cases of open burning of municipal non-hazardous waste or burning waste in unauthorized facilities, and 250 cases of pollution with construction or other inert materials.

A further 240 violations involved companies failing to comply with requirements related to waste management plans and measures outlined in those plans. Other violations included pollution with sewage and sludge waste (85 cases), environmental littering with animal waste (46 cases), and failure to meet hazardous waste management obligations (5 cases). The remaining 1,058 cases involved other types of violations.

The highest number of violations was recorded in Kvemo Kartli, with 654 cases. Tbilisi followed with 532 violations, while 372 cases were identified in Kakheti, 250 in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, 200 in Adjara, 184 in Imereti, 176 in Shida Kartli, 146 in Samtskhe-Javakheti, 130 in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, 18 in Guria, and two in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti.

The Department of Environmental Supervision said it responds to reports received through the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture’s hotline 153.
