The US House of Representatives has approved a legislative package that would provide additional assistance to Ukraine and impose new sanctions on Russia, passing the measure by a vote of 226 to 195, based on CNN and other US media reports.
Notably, 18 Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the legislation, highlighting bipartisan backing for continued assistance to Ukraine despite opposition from some Republican leaders.
The bill, known as the Ukraine Support Act, authorizes more than $1 billion in assistance for Ukraine and up to $8 billion in additional support through direct loans. It also includes measures aimed at supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts.
In addition, the legislation introduces new sanctions and export controls targeting Russia’s financial sector, oil and mining industries, as well as Russian officials and institutions.
CNN House Speaker Mike Johnson urged fellow Republicans during a closed-door meeting to oppose the bill, arguing that President Donald Trump should be given room to continue negotiations with Russia.
While many lawmakers in both major parties expected the measure to pass the House, its prospects in the Senate remain uncertain. Republican leaders in the upper chamber have previously indicated they would wait for guidance from the White House before advancing similar Russia sanctions legislation.
If approved by the Senate, the legislation would mark Congress’s most significant action on the Russia-Ukraine war since the major Ukraine aid package adopted in 2024 during the administration of former President Joe Biden.
