A Russian citizen has been arrested for illegally bringing a large quantity of gold bars into Georgia, the Investigative Service of the Ministry of Finance said.
Agency says the suspect attempted to bring 713.3 grams of gold bars, valued at 143,817 GEL (approximately $53,000), into Georgia through the Kazbegi customs checkpoint without complying with customs regulations.
An investigation has been launched under Part 2 of Article 214 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which concerns the illegal movement of goods across the customs border in large quantities.
The offense is punishable by five to seven years in prison, Investigative Service said.
