The Ombudsman’s Office is currently investigating eight cases of alleged discrimination in labor relations, affecting a total of 15 individuals. The Public Defender of Georgia has openly condemned the dismissal of public sector employees for expressing their civic opinions, pointing out that such actions violate basic labor rights and constitutional protections.
Since December 2024, the Public Defender’s Office has identified 41 individuals who were dismissed from public sector jobs. Consequently, the office has contacted these individuals, informing them about their rights and possible next steps, with some deciding to challenge their dismissal in court, while others have already utilized the Public Defender’s assistance.
The Ombudsman emphasized that any decision regarding personnel changes within public institutions must strictly comply with constitutional labor protections and fundamental principles of equality. “It is unacceptable to dismiss public sector employees simply for expressing their civic stance or opinions. Upholding the principle of equality in labor relations is essential,” the statement said.
The office has encouraged anyone facing discrimination based on their political opinions to report their cases. Complaints can be filed through email at info@pdo.ge, and further inquiries or consultations can be made through the Public Defender’s Office hotline at 1481.
