President applies to the Constitutional Court regarding election violations

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has filed a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court of Georgia, demanding that the final election results be declared unconstitutional.

The President, based on the violation of the principles of universality and secrecy of elections, is demanding that the disputed norms regulating the elections and the final results of the elections held on their basis be declared unconstitutional.

The President’s representative in Batumi, Eka Beselia, filed the lawsuit today, November 19.

Beselia claims that it is important to file a lawsuit, despite the fact that they do not trust the court.

She added that President applied to the mentioned legal way in order to protect the constitutional rights of the citizens.

“This lawsuit is very important, despite the fact that, unfortunately, there is no trust in the Constitutional Court. The independence of this court has been put under a big blow by the court itself with its recent decisions. The president uses this legal path because all legal space, all legal mechanisms must be used in order to protect the constitutional rights of citizens. This lawsuit is about the violation of two main constitutional rights: the first is a violation of universality, which was manifested in the fact that the opportunity to enjoy the constitutional right for our citizens outside the country was not only limited, but also prohibited. The second most important principle is to protect the privacy of the voice. There is ample evidence that the secrecy of the vote was violated, which is a violation of the constitutional standard. Another issue – we are disputing the constitutionality of the norms that force the members of the parliament to go through the procedure of recognition of their authority and [then terminate their authority, not at the time] when they announced that they will not be in the parliament”, Beselia notes.

For information, yesterday, the President of Georgia announced at a briefing held in the Orbeliani palace that she would file a constitutional lawsuit on November 19 regarding election violations.
