Georgian PM Irakli Kobakhidze meets Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze met with Pope Leo XIV during his visit to the Vatican, the Government Administration announced.

Kobakhidze congratulated the Pontiff on his recent election as Head of the Roman Catholic Church, conveying the best wishes of the Georgian government and the Georgian people. He expressed hope that his first official visit to the Vatican as Prime Minister would help further deepen relations between Georgia and the Holy See.

“We had a very interesting conversation with the Pope. The support of the Vatican and the Pope is very important to us. Since the restoration of our independence, this support has been extremely significant, and I expressed my gratitude to the Pope,” Kobakhidze said.

Prime Minister claimed that the meeting placed special emphasis on the Vatican’s continued backing of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We also discussed the ongoing developments in our country and the challenges facing both our nation and the wider world, including issues related to the defense of Christian values. We had a very interesting discussion about the challenges our country faces in protecting Christian and traditional values,” he added.

During the meeting, Kobakhidze extended an official invitation to Pope Leo XIV to visit Georgia.
