Georgia is celebrating Independence Day on May 26, marking 108 years since the declaration of the first Georgian republic in 1918.
On May 26, 1918, the National Council of Georgia convened in Tbilisi with 42 members and 36 candidates, unanimously adopting the Act of Independence.
At 17:10 today, the national anthem will be played across major cities in Georgia — the exact time when National Council Chairman Noe Zhordania declared independence 108 years ago.
The first republic, established after the collapse of the Russian Empire, ceased to exist in February 1921 following the military invasion and occupation by Bolshevik Russia.
Georgia regained independence decades later on April 9, 1991.
As part of today’s celebrations, conscripts of the National Military Service will take their traditional oath in Tbilisi’s Freedom Square and at 12 locations across the country.
Residents will also be able to view military equipment, weapons, and supplies in the capital and 20 other cities.
