In early 2023, the Georgian government attempted to pass a law on foreign agents that would significantly curtail freedom of association and expression, Freedom House’s annual report “Freedom in the World” noted.
The document’s section on the Eurasian region notes that repressive governments across the region have followed Moscow’s lead and proposed or passed laws declaring independent media and civil society organizations to be “foreign agents.”
“In early 2023, the Georgian government attempted to pass its own version of the Foreign Agents Law, which would significantly curtail freedom of association and expression. “After massive public demonstrations by opponents, the bill was withdrawn, although ruling party MPs indicated that the legislation might be re-introduced after a public consultation,” the report noted.
