Discussion of draft law “On foreign influence” resumes in Parliament amidst commotion

After several hours of crackdown on the peaceful demonstration last night, today, the first of May, the second hearing of the Russian law is scheduled in the legislative body.

The severely beaten leader of the UNM, deputy Levan Khabeishvili, who was physically assaulted by the police, came to parliament to participate.

The work of all media is prohibited in parliament, except television channels.  TV stations were restricted from entering the session hall.

The start of the session was delayed for a few minutes. According to MP Teona Akubardia, the reason for this is the speech of the Speaker of the Parliament, who expressed concern about the beating of Levan Khabeishvili. This was followed by a protest from the opposition, the majority deputies also joined in the confrontation.

Akubardia claimed that the majority MP Dimitri Khundadze threw a book at the oppositionists.

Shalva Papuashvili threatened to expel the opposition MPs from the hall on the pretext of speaking without a microphone. In addition, he turned off the microphone of the MPs.

“We can’t let you create a circus here,” Papuashvili addressed the opposition MPs and warned them.

The opposition and Dream MPs also confronted each other in the lobbies of the parliament building.

The organization of the arrival of citizens living in the regions to the capital was accelerated by the brutal crackdown on the protest held yesterday, April 30.

Throughout the night, the special forces used tear gas, pepper spray, and water jets against the civilians, the special forces beat the participants of the rally, among them, they brutally assaulted the chairman of the “National Movement”, Levan Khabeishvili.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs said on April 30-May 1, a total of 63 people were arrested during the protest against the Russian law.
