The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe has called on EU leaders and European states to adopt an “uncompromising policy” toward the Ivanishvili regime and impose immediate targeted sanctions on individuals responsible for human rights violations, democratic backsliding and political repression in Georgia.
The call is included in the resolution, Supporting the Georgian People’s Struggle for Democracy Against Authoritarian Captivity and Alliance with Russia, adopted at the ALDE Congress.
Based on the document, ALDE urges European leaders to take decisive measures, including targeted personal sanctions, strict financial sanctions against regime enablers and support networks, and stronger diplomatic, political and economic backing for the Georgian people.
The resolution also calls on Georgian authorities to ensure adequate, systematic and results-oriented medical treatment for Elene Khoshtaria and to immediately release all political prisoners.
At the same time, ALDE says the EU should clearly distinguish between Georgia’s ruling regime and Georgian citizens, opposing any general suspension of visa-free travel and instead focusing on sanctions against those responsible for repression.
The document also condemns the ongoing annexation of Georgia’s sovereign territories and attempts to incorporate the occupied Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia.
