PM: If our European friends really want to end polarization in Georgia, we should be given candidate status

Polarization has not decreased since last year’s decision, when Georgia was not granted candidate status, it has deepened even more – the most anti-European and radical forces are using this issue for more polarization, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili said after the meeting with Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission.

According to the Prime Minister, if the European friends of Georgia want to end polarization in Georgia, the country should be given candidate status.

“I believe that polarization has not decreased since last year’s decision, when Georgia was not granted candidate status, it has deepened even more. The most anti-European and radical forces use this issue for deeper polarization. The forces that have not done anything real, tangible for the Europeanization of our country. Therefore, of course, it would be very easy to explain and logical to say that if the status is not given to us, polarization will deepen even more, therefore, if we, and I want to express my deepest hope that, our European friends really want to end polarization in Georgia, the country, at the end of this year, taking into account all these factors and circumstances, which are geopolitics, reforms implemented in the country, etc., should be given candidate status. This will at least halve the degree of polarization”, said Irakli Garibashvili.

For information, the EU High Representative is on his official visit to Georgia on September 7-9.
