MoD: Students will not be subject to mandatory military service

According to the new “Defense Code”, students will not be subject to mandatory military service, the Ministry of Defense of Georgia reports.

As mentioned in the information of the agency, the Ministry of Defense developed the “Defense Code”, which is an important step to strengthen the Georgian army and its institutional development.

“The new code creates a solid foundation for the reserve, which is important for the country’s defense capability. With the new “Defense Code”:

“The flawed system of compulsory military service is changing; The social guarantees of the army are strengthened; A solid foundation of the reserve is created, which is important for the country’s defense capability.

“With the new code: All recruits will perform only military duty and serve in the Defense Forces; Instead of municipalities, only the Ministry of Defense will organize recruitment and training according to NATO standards; All recruits will undergo Basic Initial Combat Training (BCT) and follow-up training; The existing 12-month mandatory service period is significantly reduced.

“According to the new code, students, only if they wish, will be considered to have served the national military service during the holidays or on non-working days if they undergo military training every year, for 1 month in the summer, for the next four years, or they will go through a 2-year junior officer training program so that they will not be hindered in getting an education. If they finish their studies and receive a degree, they will be awarded the military rank of lieutenant, and if they do not receive an academic degree, they will be given the rank of sergeant. Alternatively, in accordance with certain criteria, they will be enrolled in the already active paid territorial reserve and will serve 45 days a year for 4 years, where, after the expiration of three years, they will be considered to have completed the National Service of Conscripts. Conscripts with higher education will also have the opportunity to use the mentioned conditions.

“The new code changes the terms of postponement;

“A legal loophole will be eliminated and the unscrupulous use of fictitious “religious organizations” to evade the military will be eliminated;

“The new code improves the social guarantees of the military in order to appreciate many years of service;

“The Ministry of Defense will be obliged to ensure the construction of residential areas (apartments) for a certain category of military personnel every three years, with co-financing;

“The servicemen are provided with the highest quality military equipment, living conditions, food, medical insurance and improved social conditions,” the information states.
