Four people were pulled from the sea in Ureki on Georgia’s Black Sea coast on June 18, with one young man dying despite rescue efforts.
The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Elnur Nabiev, a resident of Agmamedlo village in Marneuli municipality, local outlet Marneuli News reports.
Emergency teams say one of the four was in critical condition when brought to shore and received immediate medical assistance on site, but later died.
The incident occurred at Megobroba Beach, a designated swimming area where lifeguards and rescue services were deployed.
Davit Robakidze, representative of the Ureki mayor, told Kviris Palitra that the group entered the sea together and one of the young men could not be revived after being pulled out.
“The sea was very calm… I was surprised when I heard this news,” Robakidze said. “Four of them went into the water together, unfortunately one died, the rest were saved by rescuers.”
He added that the exact circumstances of the death are not yet confirmed and will be determined by examination.
Local officials say the beach is normally monitored, with lifeguard towers and mobile rescue units operating during the bathing season as visitor numbers increase.
Rescue services urge visitors to remain cautious in the water, even when sea conditions appear calm, and to swim only in areas monitored by lifeguards.
