Geostat: agriculture share in economy falls to 5.9% in 2025

The share of agriculture, forestry and fishing in Georgia’s economy dropped to 5.9% in 2025, a publication by the National Statistics Service of Georgia (Geostat) says.

Geostat data shows a steady downward trend over the past four years, with the sector accounting for 7.6% of GDP in 2022, 6.9% in 2023 and 6.3% in 2024, before falling further to 5.9% in preliminary 2025 figures.

Despite the declining share, the sector’s output continued to grow. In 2025, total production in agriculture, forestry and fishing reached 8.6 billion GEL, up 6.4% compared to the previous year. Added value rose to 5.4 billion GEL, while intermediate consumption stood at 3.2 billion GEL.

Agricultural output alone amounted to 8.38 billion GEL, compared to 7.84 billion GEL in 2024, marking an increase of around 550 million GEL in one year.

Crop production accounted for the largest share of output at 49%, worth 4.12 billion GEL. Livestock production made up 44%, or 3.7 billion GEL, while agricultural services represented 7%, at 561.3 million GEL.

Geostat notes that agriculture still plays a role in household incomes, though its importance is gradually declining. The share of income from agricultural product sales in household cash income fell to 4.3% in 2025, down from 6.5% in 2022.

The rural population stood at 1.485 million people at the beginning of 2025, representing 37.8% of Georgia’s population, down from over 39% a year earlier, reflecting ongoing urbanization trends.

While agricultural output continues to grow in absolute terms, its share in the wider economy is shrinking due to faster expansion in other sectors, including services, trade and real estate. Geostat data shows that “other sectors” accounted for 48.8% of the economy in 2025, the highest level in recent years.
