The UK has announced new sanctions against Georgia-linked individuals and entities accused of supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Businessman Otar Partskhaladze, with ties to Russia and the ruling Georgian Dream party, and politician-media owner Levan Vasadze, accused of spreading pro-Russian disinformation, were among those chosen.
Two oil tankers that transported Russian oil to Georgia’s Batumi port as part of Moscow’s ‘shadow fleet’ were also sanctioned. The vessels are now banned from UK ports and from registering under the UK flag.
Additional designations include Aeza International, linked to Russian disinformation efforts, and HeliCo Group, active in Russia’s transport sector.
“We’re cutting off another lifeline by targeting and deterring those in Georgia who provide support for Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine,” said UK Minister of State Stephen Doughty.
The announcement came as the UK pledged £142 million for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and reaffirmed its commitment to maintain pressure on Moscow until the war ends.
