The Government of Georgia has adopted a decree outlining plans to construct four regional facilities for non-hazardous waste disposal and associated waste transfer station complexes by January 1, 2030.
Under the decree, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture must plan and implement measures for the construction of regional waste disposal facilities that meet modern requirements in selected municipalities, in line with regional planning principles.
The implementation of the projects will be carried out by ‘Georgian Solid Waste Management Company LLC’, which is responsible for planning and implementing the measures required to establish the facilities and related waste transfer stations in accordance with Georgian legislation.
The planned infrastructure will cover four regional zones: Kakheti; Shida Kartli and Mtskheta-Mtianeti; Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti; and Samtskhe-Javakheti.
The decree also requires the company to involve international consulting firms with relevant experience to prepare the design documentation needed for the construction of the regional facility complexes. The selection of consultants will be conducted in accordance with Georgia’s state procurement legislation or the procurement rules of international financial institutions.
The planning of the regional facilities must also take into account the potential development of waste processing facilities.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture will hold consultations with international financial institutions to secure funding for the international consulting services.
