A minor identified by the initials N.I. was arrested in Tbilisi. She was a former student of young teacher Giga Avaliani, who died following a violent attack in October 2025, and the girlfriend of the main convicted person in the case.
Giga Avaliani case prosecutor Ketevan Sonidze told Radio Liberty that N.I. was detained on charges of “inciting the intentional infliction of serious bodily harm committed by a group” under Article 25-117, Part 3, subparagraph “l” of the Criminal Code. The family denies the charges. Under the law, prosecutors must apply to the court within 48 hours after charges are presented to request a detention measure for the arrested person.
Late on August 5, Interior Ministry officers arrested another minor girl in connection with teacher Giga Avaliani’s case. The minor, identified by the initials A.B., was a friend of one of the convicted individuals in the case, G.R. A.B. was detained on charges of “failure to report a particularly serious crime” under Article 376, Part 2 of the Criminal Code, which carries a sentence of 3 to 7 years in prison.
Several minors have been convicted under various articles of the Criminal Code following the assault on teacher Giga Avaliani, which led to his death. The 28-year-old teacher was attacked by minors in Tbilisi’s Temka settlement in October 2025. He survived for 23 days and died on October 24 without regaining consciousness.
