The cameraman of TV Pirveli, Lekso Lashkarava, who was beaten by opponents of Tbilisi Pride on July 5 while performing his duties, has passed away.
He was found dead at his home. The exact cause of death is still unknown.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs launched an investigation regarding the death of Lekso Lashkarava under Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, the investigative agency reported.
MIA stated that a relevant forensic medical examination will be appointed.
“We also would like to note that on July 5 of the current year, during the coverage of the manifestation held against “Tbilisi Pride”, Aleksandre Lashkarava- a journalist and cameraman of “TV Pirveli” was physically and verbally abused while performing his professional activities in the office of “Shame” movement located on Ingorokva Street.
“The investigation is in progress on the fact of unlawful interference with the journalist’s professional activities under the threats of violence, persecution under violence, or threat of violence and group violence – within the frames of which 4 individuals have already been detained”, reads the statement.
GEORGIA TODAY extends its condolences to the family members of the deceased and the staff of TV Pirveli.
As a result of the assaults by the opponents of Tbilisi Pride, up to 50 media representatives were injured. Aggressive protestors sought to attack and physically assault anyone who was associated with the media.
