US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are set to meet face-to-face on September 23 in New York, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced during a press briefing.
The meeting will be held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, which is expected to bring together leaders from nearly 150 countries.
The Trump–Zelensky talks come at a pivotal moment for Ukraine, as the country continues to defend itself against Russia’s full-scale invasion. The United States remains one of Kyiv’s key allies, providing military, financial, and diplomatic support since the start of the war.
Observers expect the leaders to discuss continued US assistance to Ukraine, strategies for strengthening international backing, and joint efforts to counter Russian aggression. The meeting is also seen as an opportunity to reaffirm the US commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while addressing concerns in Washington over the scale and sustainability of future aid.
For Zelensky, the talks will be a chance to secure fresh assurances from Washington ahead of critical months in the conflict, as well as to bolster Ukraine’s position on the global stage during the high-level UN gathering.
