Saakashvili: In 2008, the army stood firm, people took to the streets, I stayed in Tbilisi

In 2008, our army stood strong, people took to the streets, I stayed in Tbilisi and put the world on our feet, our partners came to Tbilisi and the Americans sent the fleet to save Georgia’s statehood, – Mikheil Saakashvili, the third president of Georgia, writes about this in the social media.

He notes that he is being held captive only because Georgia did not surrender to the enemy.

“In 2008, our army stood strong, people took to the streets, I stayed in Tbilisi and put the world on our feet, our partners came to Tbilisi and the Americans sent the fleet to save Georgia’s statehood.

I am being held captive only because I did not surrender Georgia to the enemy.

Then the enemy could not capture us, and it is a tragedy that what we defended with our strength, now we have to gain again.

On October 26, we have to restore Georgia’s independence and freedom once again after 1991,” Saakashvili wrote.

16 years have passed since the August war.

In the August 2008 Russia-Georgia war, 170 employees of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia, 14 employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and 224 civilians were killed. The total number of wounded and injured civilian and military persons is 2,232, among them, 1,045 persons are military personnel.
