Public Defender Levan Ioseliani has released a statement regarding the death of 46-year-old Ioseb Gorgadze at VivaMedi Clinic. The Ombudsman’s Office says a representative was present when Gorgadze was admitted but could not interview him due to his critical condition.
The statement notes that the Public Defender’s Office reviewed relevant materials, including video footage from the corridor near Gorgadze’s cell. However, there was no surveillance inside the cell itself. Medical records confirmed multiple injuries, and the Office emphasizes the need for a thorough investigation and forensic analysis to determine their cause.
The Public Defender’s Office began monitoring the case on January 29, when news of Gorgadze’s serious injuries first emerged. Their representative visited the clinic, interviewed medical staff, and spoke with both prisoners and staff at Gldani Institution No. 8. Due to Gorgadze’s condition, he could not be interviewed.
The Office pledged to continue examining the case and cooperating with investigative authorities to ensure proper oversight.
