Ioseb Gorgadze, a 46-year-old prisoner transferred from Gldani Institution No. 8 to Vivamedi Clinic with serious injuries, has died, his lawyer Mukhran Ghurtskaya told journalists.
Ghurtskaya says Gorgadze was admitted to the clinic after being severely beaten on January 30. “The family was informed around 10:00 PM last night that he had died from the injuries he sustained. He fought for his life for nearly three months but could not be saved,” the lawyer said.
He criticized the investigation, saying no one has been charged and that the initial probe, launched under Article 118 of the Criminal Code (infliction of less severe harm), failed to reflect the seriousness of the case. Following Gorgadze’s death, the Special Investigation Service has taken over.
Ghurtskaya said Gorgadze had been “beaten to death and tortured” in prison, although it remains unclear whether the attackers were fellow inmates or staff. The prisoner reportedly suffered about 30 facial fractures and brain swelling.
