Georgian Public Broadcaster may no longer broadcast the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the issue discussed at a meeting of its Board of Trustees.
First Channel has traditionally aired World Cup matches for Georgian viewers, but board members indicate the situation may change this time.
They point to the significantly increased fee requested for broadcasting rights by FIFA as a key factor.
Board members also discussed the broader importance of keeping major sporting events on the Public Broadcaster. Some noted that the First Channel has historically provided free access to major tournaments, including the World Cup, which remains important for audiences.
The meeting also raised questions about the broadcaster’s strategy, including whether losing such content would affect viewer interests.
