A drone entered Latvia’s airspace early on August 14 and was shot down by NATO fighter jets patrolling the Baltic region, Latvia’s armed forces said.
The drone’s origin remains unknown. Authorities said there is currently no further threat to Latvia’s airspace and that specialists are examining the area where the debris fell.
Residents in five Latvian districts received alerts around 4 a.m. warning of an airspace threat and advising them to seek shelter, according to Delfi.
The incident comes as Ukrainian forces were attacking Russia’s Ust-Luga port on the Baltic Sea. Latvia has reported several drone incursions since Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine, including an incident in June when NATO jets also shot down a drone over Latvia.
