Lawyer: Man beaten by police in Gori taken to clinic after health condition worsens

Papuna Lotsulashvili, who was physically assaulted by police officers in Gori, has been transferred to a clinic after his health condition deteriorated, said his lawyer, Lasha Tkesheladze.

Tkesheladze said Lotsulashvili was taken to a medical facility by an ambulance crew after experiencing worsening symptoms.

Earlier, the lawyer shared a video on social media showing Lotsulashvili lying on a stretcher inside an ambulance vehicle.

Tkesheladze says Lotsulashvili is reportedly being transferred to the First University Clinic of Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) for further medical examinations.

“He had a headache, nausea, he vomited, he is very weak and in pain. When the family called an ambulance, the emergency medical team considered it necessary to transfer him to a clinic for additional examinations,” the lawyer said.

Tkesheladze also spoke about the psychological impact of the incident on his client.

“We know that he is suffering from psychological stress and is a victim of torture. This must be assessed comprehensively, and I hope the clinic will properly evaluate it,” he added.

For context, two individuals — Papuna Lotsulashvili and his friend — were physically assaulted by law enforcement officers in Gori’s so-called Kombinati settlement. Six police officers have been detained in connection with the incident.

Prosecutor’s Office says the officers will be charged under Article 333, Part 3, Subparagraph “b” of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which concerns abuse of official authority committed with violence and carries a prison sentence of between five and eight years.

At the same time, an investigation has also been launched against Lotsulashvili under Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which concerns violence against a police officer.
