Papuashvili: No common ground with current EU leadership

Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili has sharply criticized the European Union’s leadership, stating that Brussels has lost its sense of justice and rational decision-making, both in its approach toward Georgia and in its broader geopolitical stance.

“When speaking about Brussels today, it is difficult to find logic, justice, or reason,” Papuashvili said. “The decisions being made there show that the European Union has long moved away from rational governance.”

Speaker claimed that the current leadership of the European Union no longer represents the interests of European citizens and instead operates based on a narrow political agenda disconnected from reality.

“The EU leadership must change,” Papuashvili stated. “They have distanced themselves from the peoples of Europe and now act based on political instructions rather than the values they claim to represent.”

He stressed that Georgia has no intention of sacrificing its sovereignty or national interests in exchange for political pressure.

“We will not trade our sovereignty for any form of political blackmail. The Georgian people clearly see that there is no justice or objective reasoning behind Brussels’ decisions. What we see instead is politically motivated pressure that harms both Georgia and the credibility of the European Union itself,” Papuashvili said.

The Speaker also criticized the European Union for what he described as violations of its own principles, particularly referencing the introduction of visa restrictions for holders of Georgian diplomatic passports.

“The imposition of visa requirements violated the 2010 agreement between Georgia and the European Union. In doing so, Brussels itself breached international law — the very standards it so often demands others to uphold,” he said.

Papuashvili argued that the current EU leadership is driving the bloc toward instability rather than security.

“If we had followed Brussels’ instructions, today we would be clearing rubble,” he said. “Had we imposed sanctions on Russia, closed our airspace, and followed the path of escalation urged by the European Commission, our country would have been dragged into war. The European Union was created as a peace project, yet today it increasingly speaks the language of confrontation.”

He warned that such an approach risks plunging Europe into deeper crises.

“Those who prepare for war will inevitably end up in war. That is the logic of escalation,” Papuashvili said.

Concluding his remarks, the Speaker asserted that meaningful cooperation with the European Union will only be possible once there is a shift in leadership and political direction in Brussels.

“We cannot find common ground with a bureaucracy that has lost its connection to reality. Only when genuine, patriotic forces—true representatives of European values—come to the forefront in Europe will it be possible to restore balanced and respectful relations,” Papuashvili concluded.
