Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has entered a Paris prison after being sentenced to five years for criminal conspiracy over illegal campaign funding from the regime of Muammar Gaddafi, the late Libyan dictator.
Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, is the first former head of an EU country to serve a custodial sentence and the first postwar French leader to be jailed.
The verdict marks a dramatic fall for one of France’s most prominent political figures. Prosecutors alleged that Sarkozy’s 2007 presidential campaign received millions of euros in cash from Gaddafi’s regime — accusations he has vehemently denied for over a decade.
The case, which shook France’s political establishment, stemmed from years of investigation into alleged illicit financing, corruption, and influence-peddling. Sarkozy continues to insist on his innocence and is expected to appeal.
His imprisonment underscores the judiciary’s readiness to hold even former heads of state accountable, sending a strong message about the rule of law and political transparency in Europe.
