National Food Agency announces schedule for dog overpopulation management program

Georgia’s National Food Agency has released details on upcoming locations and timelines for its ongoing domestic animal overpopulation management program, carried out in coordination with local municipalities.

Agency says most of the animals recently transferred from Zugdidi to a Kutaisi shelter for veterinary procedures have already been returned. Only 17 dogs remained at the Kutaisi facility, and they are scheduled to be returned to Zugdidi today. The agency also reported that dogs have already been returned to their original environments in Abasha (five animals) and Vani (three animals).

As part of the program, the agency has published the schedule and locations for upcoming operations:

April 3 – Imereti, Zestaponi, area near City Hall, 10:00

April 3 – Imereti, Samtredia, area near City Hall, 09:30

April 4 – Kakheti, Kvareli, area near City Hall, 10:30

April 4 – Imereti, Kutaisi, area near City Hall, 10:30

April 6 – Imereti, Chiatura, area near City Hall, 11:00

April 6 – Kakheti, Signagi, area near City Hall, 11:00

April 7 – Kakheti, Signagi, Tsnori center, 11:00

April 7 – Imereti, Tskaltubo, area near City Hall, 11:00

The agency is calling on caregivers and animal welfare advocates to bring dogs to the designated locations, where they will receive rabies vaccinations on-site if needed. Animals that have not been neutered or spayed will be transferred to shelters for procedures, with the consent of caregivers and based on proper documentation.

Following veterinary treatment and rehabilitation, the animals will be returned to their original locations.

The National Food Agency added that in cases where it is not possible to transport animals to the designated sites, caregivers can contact the agency directly. Mobile teams will then visit the specified location to carry out the necessary procedures.
