The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has opened an investigation into the alleged illegal privatization of property belonging to the Georgian Technical University (GTU). The probe follows a formal complaint filed by the university’s rector, Davit Gurgenidze, earlier this month.

The the Prosecutor’s Office revealed that Rector Gurgenidze submitted a statement on October 17, reporting that several assets owned by GTU, including land plots, buildings and adjoining sports fields located at 77 Kostava Street in Tbilisi, were allegedly transferred to LLC University of Georgia through unlawful means.

The Department for Combating Corruption within the Prosecutor General’s Office launched the case on October 24, under Article 182 (Parts 2(d) and 3(b)) of the Criminal Code of Georgia which pertains to misappropriation or embezzlement of property.

“The public will be periodically informed about main developments and legal evaluations,” the Prosecutor’s Office stated.

Rector Gurgenidze also requested that the seized property be returned to the university, alleging that the disputed assets had been appropriated years ago by individuals linked to the family of former President Mikheil Saakashvili.

The investigation is ongoing.
