Georgian MMA star Ilia Topuria has been discharged from hospital following his UFC lightweight championship bout against Justin Gaethje, based on a report by Eurosport.
Eurosport journalist Álvaro Colmenero reported that Topuria has left a hospital in Washington after undergoing medical examinations following the fight.
Based on the report, the former featherweight champion sustained fractures to both eye sockets during the bout. However, doctors reportedly determined that there was no bone displacement, meaning surgery will not be necessary. The publication added that Topuria’s right eye suffered more damage than his left.
Topuria sustained the injuries during a grueling contest with Gaethje for the UFC lightweight title. Despite a determined performance, the Georgian fighter was defeated, suffering the first loss of his UFC career and ending his unbeaten run inside the promotion.
The fight attracted significant attention from MMA fans worldwide, as Topuria sought to become a two-division UFC champion after previously capturing the featherweight title. The lightweight championship bout was widely regarded as one of the biggest fights of his career.
Neither Topuria nor his team have yet provided detailed information regarding his recovery timeline or when he is expected to return to training and competition. However, the reported absence of bone displacement is considered a positive development and could shorten his rehabilitation period compared to more severe orbital injuries requiring surgery.
Topuria, one of Georgia’s most successful mixed martial artists, has become a national sporting icon in recent years thanks to his rise through the UFC ranks and his championship success. His performances have drawn widespread support in Georgia and among MMA fans internationally.
The fighter is expected to undergo further medical monitoring in the coming weeks before any decision is made regarding his return to the Octagon.
