The European Union has reaffirmed its call for calm and nonviolence in Georgia, stressing that it does not take sides in the country’s political landscape.
Speaking at a press conference in Tbilisi, EU Ambassador to Georgia Paweł Herczyński pointed out that the Union “condemns violence by anyone, in any form, in any shape.” He emphasized that the EU’s role in Georgia is to engage with all segments of society, from the ruling party and opposition to civil groups and academia without supporting any political force.
“As the EU Ambassador in Georgia, I try to have contacts with everyone. The European Union does not support any political party in Georgia or anywhere else. It is for the Georgian people to decide who governs their country,” Herczyński said.
He also recalled the EU’s earlier appeals for restraint during the tense election period. “Following the October 5 local elections, the EU’s High Representative Kaja Kallas and Commissioner Kos called on everyone to refrain from violence. In addition, ten days before the elections, the EU Embassy, together with 27 European embassies in Georgia, issued an unprecedented joint statement urging calm and nonviolence,” the Ambassador stated.
