Prosecutor’s office to appeal acquittal of journalist Nika Katsia

The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office has announced it will appeal the decision of the Tbilisi City Court, which acquitted Nika Katsia, who had been charged with the illegal acquisition and possession of a particularly large amount of narcotics.

Based on the statement, law enforcement officers detained Katsia on December 7, 2024, and charged him with possessing 14.5 grams of cocaine (base). The substance was allegedly seized during a personal search.

The prosecution maintains that the evidence obtained in the case was thoroughly examined by the court. However, the Tbilisi City Court rejected the evidence presented, found Katsia not guilty, and released him from custody.

“The Prosecutor’s Office will appeal the ruling of the Tbilisi City Court to the Tbilisi Court of Appeals within the legally defined timeframe, following the receipt of the reasoned judgment,” the agency stated.

Journalist Nika Katsia, who faced drug-related charges, was acquitted by Tbilisi City Court and released from the courtroom following a ruling by Judge Tamar Mchedlishvili.
